The original township of Ellsworth was settled in 1763. It was a ship building center and a large lumber port during the 19th century. During the 1960s and 1970s, a new Ellsworth business center developed along High Street. This area has now become the largest shopping district in Hancock County.
The Ellsworth Area has great restaurants and coffee shops to suit any palette, various stores catering to every need, from hiking gear to eclectic lampshades, bookstores, furniture and video stores and of course homemade Maine Made products.
However, if you would rather do something besides shop, the town has many historic buildings, points of interest and beautiful scenic areas. In addition to visiting Acadia National Park, you can visit a wildlife sanctuary, hike along a shore road, attend a concert, visit the Colonel Black Mansion, visit the historical library, play some golf, visit a winery, or take one of several day tours – just to name a few.
